Sustainability is a term we have heard many times, for example in connection with theCO2 footprint<\/sub>, an investment, advertising, energy-saving measures, new labels or Fridays for Future. For some, it is simply an empty phrase or greenwashing; for others, it is a philosophy of life and a driver for new, sustainable business models. The understanding is correspondingly broad. So what exactly does sustainability mean and why is it so important to actively deal with it after this article at the latest?<\/span><\/p>\n

Clearly, sustainability has a multidisciplinary use and meaning. Most sources have one thing in common: they paraphrase the term as a system’s ability to endure and sustain itself. In terms of ecology, then, it is the ability of biological systems to remain healthy, diverse, and productive over time, such as a wetland or a forest.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the inclusion of humans, who also operate within the fabric of these biological systems, the concept of sustainable development has emerged, defined by the United Nations Brundtland Commission in March 1987 as follows: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” [1]<\/a> By definition, sustainable development encompasses environmental, economic and social aspects, referred to as the three dimensions of sustainability. With this understanding, a particular process is only sustainable if it does not cause irreversible change to the environment, is economically viable, and benefits society.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, there are companies for which sustainability is already a discontinued model. Because of the fact that many things have been sustainably violated in the past, sustainable management would mean merely maintaining a poor condition and not improving it. Companies like Patagonia have therefore already dropped the term sustainability from their vocabulary. They are taking the approach of developing regenerative business models that are dynamic, emergent, and beneficial to people and other species. They take a participatory, iterative, and individualized approach, attuned to the community and environment, with the goal of restoring, renewing, or revitalizing sources of energy and materials. So, fundamentally, it should be about thinking in terms of whole systems in order to, in turn, create resilient and equitable systems that meet the needs of <\/span>of society with the integrity of nature.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What sustainability or sustainable development means in general should be clear by now and also that most of us in the role as managers, employees or consumers are still very far away from it. <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Aufgrund der vielen unterschiedlichen Verst\u00e4ndnisse von Nachhaltigkeit, kommt es in Projekten h\u00e4ufig zu Verwirrung und Missverst\u00e4ndnissen zwischen den verschiedenen beteiligten Einheiten. Genauso wie zum Beispiel Umweltsch\u00fctzer, Wirtschaftswissenschaftler und Politiker verschiedene Ziele im Sinn haben, haben es auch die verschiedenen Abteilungen in einem Unternehmen. Umso wichtiger ist es, im Zeitalter, in dem sich jedes Unternehmen mit Themen im Kontext Nachhaltigkeit besch\u00e4ftigen muss, grunds\u00e4tzlich zu versuchen, die eigene Nachhaltigkeitsperspektive zu erweitern, um eine ausreichende Tiefe im Verst\u00e4ndnis von Nachhaltigkeit f\u00fcr das Unternehmen zu erreichen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Los geht\u2019s \u2013 Schritt f\u00fcr Schritt<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Jetzt bleibt noch die Frage, wie man sich am besten auf die sogenannte Sustainabilty Journey[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0begibt und es schafft, von der Einhaltung gesetzlicher Vorschriften zu einer nachhaltigen Unternehmensf\u00fchrung zu kommen[3]<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 das Ganze kann und darf im \u00dcbrigen auch Spass machen \ud83d\ude0a.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schritt 1: Status Quo bestimmen<\/span><\/h3>\n

Um den aktuellen Umsetzungsgrad der Nachhaltigkeit in der Organisation zu bestimmen, kann man auf wissenschaftliche Methoden zur\u00fcckgreifen, z.B. ein neuartiges Self-Assessment-Werkzeug[4]<\/sup><\/a>, oder sich Initiativen wie dem Swiss Triple Impact Programm anschliessen. Wichtig ist, dass man \u00fcberhaupt mal beginnt und bestimmt, wo man steht, welche Themen f\u00fcr das Unternehmen (und dessen Stakeholder) relevant sind und welche Herausforderungen es gibt. Dazu z\u00e4hlt auch sich zu \u00fcberlegen, was Nachhaltigkeit eigentlich genau f\u00fcr das Unternehmen bedeutet. Wichtig ist dabei auch, die Mitarbeitenden schon zu Beginn in den Prozess zu involvieren.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schritt 2: Vision formulieren<\/span><\/h3>\n

Das Nachhaltigkeitsverst\u00e4ndnis muss in der Unternehmensvision Platz finden, aus der die Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie abgeleitet wird. Wichtig ist, dass die Vision als klares Commitment auch adressatengerecht kommuniziert wird.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schritt 3: Ziele & Massnahmen definieren<\/span><\/h3>\n

Konkreter wird es dann mit der Formulierung von SMARTEn Zielen f\u00fcr die relevanten Nachhaltigkeits-Themen und die Definition von entsprechenden Massnahmen. Hier Ziele zu definieren, die vielleicht nicht den gr\u00f6ssten Impact haben, aber z.B. f\u00fcr die Mitarbeitenden greifbar sind und Spass machen, ist ebenfalls wichtig. Kleine Anreize und sanfte Stupser (Nudging[5]<\/a>) k\u00f6nnen zus\u00e4tzlich helfen, die Massnahmen umzusetzen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schritt 4: Strukturen schaffen<\/span><\/h3>\n

Angepasste Strukturen, Rahmenbedingungen und Prozesse m\u00fcssen so definiert werden, dass sie die Umsetzung der Massnahmen und die kontinuierliche Weiterf\u00fchrung der Transformation unterst\u00fctzen.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Kleine Schritte sind besser als keine<\/strong><\/p>\n

Die Klimaerw\u00e4rmung zeigt deutlich vor Augen, dass ein nachhaltiges (oder besser noch ein regeneratives) Handeln n\u00f6tig ist und jeder entweder in der Rolle als B\u00fcrger:In, Konsument:In, Mitarbeiter:In oder als F\u00fchrungsperson einen Beitrag leisten kann und muss, wenn wir der zuk\u00fcnftigen Generation noch etwas Sch\u00f6nheit dieser Welt hinterlassen m\u00f6chten.<\/p>\n
